Alfred Pennyworth

Alfred Pennyworth was a happy old man who lived with his wife, Rose. Everyday he would wake up at exactly 4:16am and get dressed. He wore the same exact outfit every single day, his big round glasses, blue horizontal striped pants, a light gray shirt with purple suspenders, and a green bowtie. He has grey hair, blue eyes, a lot of wrinkles, a big button nose, and always had a huge smile on his face. Alfred Hitchcock uses omission to set up suspense and a feeling of skepticism for the viewer. Lighting, dialogue, and distance all are tools Hitchcock employs to aid in his omission of certain details. The main asset Hitchcock exploits is the distance L.B. Jeffries is trapped at in comparison to where the real drama takes place for much of the film. This distance leaves the viewer feeling perturbed.

Hitchcock utilizes the distance between Jeffries's window, through which most of the film is shot, and the actions taking place in the apartments all the way across the courtyard to hide the dialogue between the characters. Jeffries is unable to leave his apartment and since the camera does not either, the viewer is rendered just as impotent as him. Hitchcock makes it clear that Mr. Thorwald is on the phone and from the attention drawn to him the viewer is led to believe that what he is saying could lead to the discovery of what happened to his wife. Alfred Noyes Analysis

Alfred Noyes was a poet in the 20th century. In this paper we will be looking at Alfred Noyes' life and examining one of his greatest poems "The Highwayman". Alfred Noyes was born in Wolverhampton on September 16,1880. He began writing at a vey young age and at 14 wrote his first epic poem. He was educated at Exter College in Oxford, but did not finish as he was focused on releasing his first volume of poems, "The Loom of the Years" in 1902. In 1907 he married the American Garnett Daniels and moved to America in 1913. He stayed there until 1923. He converted to Catholicism in 1925 and a year later Garnett Daniels died. He then married Mary Angela Mayne Weld–Blundell and moved to Lisle Combe, St. Lawrence, Isle of Wight in 1929. Alfred returned to Britain 20 years later, however. In 1953 he published his autobiography, Two Worlds for Memory and passed away 5 years later at the age of 77. Alfred Noyes was very popular in the United States; he visited 15 times and lectured in more than 1,000 American cities and towns. Though he never graduated college, he was made a professor of Modern English Literature at Princeton in 1914. For his service as a writer in World War I he was bestowed the honor of Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1918. Alfred Noyes had very loyal readers and fans. In Oklahoma City on April 19, 1995, at 8:50 AM Timothy McVeigh parked a Ryder truck on the street in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. The truck had a very powerful bomb made out of ammonium nitrate and fuel. McVeigh set a timed fuse and in turn of events it was bombs away while he fled the scene in a getaway car.

At precisely 9:02 AM the bomb detonated ripping through the building's north wall. Killing 168 people and wounding more than 680 others, it also destroyed nearly 324 nearby buildings. 19 victims were young children that attended the day care on the second story of the building, some of them as young as 6 months old. But incensed McVeigh was already 90 miles north.

When police interrogated McVeigh, they found out his motive for bombarding the building. McVeigh felt upset because poor actions of the ATF during the siege didn't go as planned. McVeigh stated in response "ATF, all you tyrannical people will swing in the wind one day for your treasonous actions against the Constitution of the United States. Remember the Nuremberg War Trials."

The reason McVeigh bombed the building was because he recognized that there was an ATF office inside of the building and that would be his initial target. McVeigh was unaware that there was a daycare program inside the building.
