The 1972 Olympic men's basketball event was one of the most controversial events in Olympic history and was the first ever loss for Team USA since the sport was introduced into the Olympic in 1936. The US team won seven gold medals and was favored to win in the 1972 Summer Olympics. The team convincingly won its first eight games of the tournament putting its overall Olympic record at 63–0 and establishing a final against the Soviets. The first Olympic basketball tournament was organized at the 1936 Olympics. According to the Olympic rules of that time, all of the competitors were tyros. The tournament was held indoors for the first time in 1948. The American team proved its ascendance, winning the first seven Olympic tournaments until 1968, without losing a single game.
