Air Transat operates chartered flights for vacationing and flying customers to different spots all over the world. There was need for the company to expand but due to the manual planning and scheduling system the company employed, it does not have the capacity for expansion and rapid growth. With the growth of their customers overwhelming, in 1993 air transit purchased a system for airline operation management system, know as ALTITUDE, which is a three module optimization package that will help them in the routing of their aircrafts, pair their crew members and effectively assign their monthly work assignments.

The assignment of fleets and flight scheduling dictate the first part of all the fights that will be flown during a specific period. This is done according to demand, the time given to company at any airport and competitions from other company. The marketing department conducts the evaluation and they turn in their findings to the department that are responsible for planning. The planner then manually creates a schedule for maybe one year ahead and also he allocates the fleets in the order of their importance, since the company is operating only three types of aircraft. This planning of course is depends on demand by customers, the capacity of the aircraft and their speed. Air Transat uses ALTITUDE for the designing of monthly batch of assignments for about 250 flight deck personnel through roaster. This also made it possible for them to use bidlines in creating the schedules for their 900 flight attendants. With the growing trend recorded in the industry and complications that may result in real world instance, the manual operations cannot solve a large–scale problems hence the need for the introduction of advance computer software.
