In the classic novel, A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway, the reader is immediately introduced to Frederic Henry, who is both the narrator and protagonist. Use of the first person point of view draws the reader more closely into the story, allowing for the personal connection between oneself and Henry. This intimate relationship leads to an understanding, if not sympathetic, view of all his feelings. Throughout his adventures, Henry learns to overcome many different types of wounds which are shared with the reader. His maturation and learning from experience becomes evident as the story advances. In the most literal sense, Henry is wounded physically in a dugout at the battlefront. While he is conversing and eating dinner with some of the Italian ambulance drivers, they are hit by a trench mortar shell. The reader soon learns that this accident has fractured one of Henry's legs. Soon he is well enough to be transported to an American hospital in Milan. Here, he clearly exemplifies his common sense and determination. Refusing to wait the suggested six months for his knee surgery, he insists upon a second opinion by a more highly ranked surgeon. He argued with the hospital 's doctor saying, "I don 't want my leg fooled with by a first captain. If he was any good he would be a major. I know what a first captain is, doctor" (Hemingway 85). By doing this, he successfully receives his surgery the following day and enjoys the next few months of recuperation experiencing
