A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway, tells a love story between Frederic Henry and Catherine Barkley during World War I. As the story builds up Frederic Henry starts to fall in love with Catherine Barkley. In the beginning of the novel, Catherine asks him, "Have you ever loved anyone?" (Hemingway 31). Henry responds by saying he has not. After Henry gets hurt during the war he gets sent to a hospital in Milan and the first thing he asks is if Miss Barkley was there (Hemingway 84). That shows Henry really missed Catherine after being away from her due to the war. When Catherine arrives at the hospital in Milan Henry finally admits his love to her. He told her, "You've got to stay. They can't send you away. I'm crazy in love with you." (Hemingway 92). This statement showing their love developing and that Frederic Henry is not playing a game anymore. Also as their relationship becomes more serious the couple starts talking about their future children. Catherine says, "Maybe our children will have fine temperatures." Henry responds by saying, "Our children will have beastly temperatures."( Hemingway 103). This shows how it all started off as a cruel act, and now their relationship is very serious and they are both very in love. After a while, Catherine Barkley started doing daily night duty to see Henry. Miss Gage has to speak to Henry so Catherine could take some nights off as she was looking awfully tired (
