In the novel, A Farewell to Arms, Ernest Hemingway conveys this simple philosophy to tell the story of Frederic's internal battle between love and war. Frederic is internally attempting to fill the empty void in his heart with love, while simultaneously emptying the overflowing bucket of harsh memories from war. The itch of every man is the love of a woman, and this itch is especially growing within Frederic, because, as the musical about men alone at war, South Pacific, states, "There is nothing like a dame." I'm afraid of the rain because sometimes I see me dead in it," (Hemingway 126). The rain is not only foreshadowing, yet it is a metaphor to death. For example, when Aymo, Tenente, Piani, Bonello, and Frederic "were on a road that led to a river"(Hemingway 209) , when it began to rain again. Which led to a shooting between Germans (supposedly) and the men. The constant repetition of rain when death is present shows the metaphor that rain itself brings to the book. When rain comes, death follows. The novel ends with Frederic leaving the hospital after Catherine has died, it begins to rain. Since rain is shown at the end, maybe the author is leaving the reader of the thought of Frederic going downhill in the future. The presence of rain equates to the presence of death. This use of rain as a metaphor for death shows Hemingway's attitude through the relationship between Frederic and Catherine. Rain is temporary, it comes when a cloud overflows with moisture and disappears when the sun shines brightly, as goes the relationship between the two.
