"A Lesson Before Dying" is a novel that depicts racism, in–justice and sacrifice all through the perspective of a black male. Gaines does a great job of making the reader feel like they are watching all this unfold in real life. One of the reasons why Gaines was able to tell this story so well because of his own personal experiences, similar to the ones in "A Lesson Before Dying" making the his story seem sincere.
