Even though we use language in our everyday lives most of us don't put much thought into what words we use or the different ways we may speak to someone in various situations. For example you may have noticed that the language you use when having a conversation with your friends differs from when you are speaking with your family. Difference in the use of language can also vary based on a persons class, gender, education, age, ethnicity and the particular social context they find themselves in.

We will begin by looking at the correlation that language has with race. People often associate certain races with certain languages. For example if you physically look Chinese even if you have lived in Canada your whole life most people meeting you for the first time may falsly assume that you can speak Chinese. People associate language with a race and whatever stereotypes they have about the race is also transferred if they hear the language of the said race.

During the podcast the host discusses how there is a strong phobia of Arabic language in our culture. This phobia was created when 9/11 happened and an Islamic terrorists group flew planes into the world trade center.
