A Report On The Khorasan Group


The Khorasan Group. A deadly subsection of al–Qaeda comprised of an alleged group of senior Al–Qaeda members operating in Syria. The small group is filled with combatants on many, if not all of the terrorist watch lists. While the group has been officially labeled diminished since the death of two leaders in drone strikes, the mere existence of such a group posed an interesting threat to our homeland. Officially, the Khorasan group had been denounced. Even though al–Nursra leader Abu Mohammed al–Golani denied the existence of the group, the sheer mention of splinter factions in Syria was enough to warrant diverting resources. Ayman al Zawahiri ordered a number of al–Qaeda operatives from around the globe to move to Syria in 2013 and 2014. (Lund, 2014) These terrorists, including Fadhli, formed the Khorasan Group, which was instructed to explore different ways to launch mass–casualty attacks in the West. The Khorasan Group is not a separate entity, but instead deeply embedded with the Nusra Front. The thought of such a group existing, brings fear to the definition of effective terrorism. The Khorasan group is a deadly threat whether or not they truly exist. The beliefs on the Khorasan group revolve around the extremist Islamic Salafi jihadism. This is a take on conservative Islam or Wahhabism. Coined by scholar Gilles Kepel in 2002, Salafi Jihadism describes a hybridization of ideaologies even though it is often colappsed into being called simply 'jihadism '. The Khorasan
