How could a simple quilt ruin the relationship with anyone family? "You will not understand. The point is these quilts, these quilts!" (Walker 321). Characterization relates to the characters personality and appearance. Maggie and Dee both wanted the quilt that their grandmother made. Maggie is the youngest of her sister Dee. Mama gave the quilt to Dee and Maggie was upset. Alice Walker is the author of this story "Everyday Use". Maggie is the youngest of her sister Dee. She is shy and passive. Maggie is ashamed of herself. She has burn scars down her arms and legs, she is thin and dark, and her hair is not that nice: "Maggie will be nervous until after her sister goes: she will stand hopelessly in corners homely and ashamed of the burn scars ... She is smarter than Maggie. But, Dee knows the least about her heritage. Dee always want nice things: "A yellow organdy dress to wear to her graduation from high school; black pumps to match a green suit she'd made from an old suit somebody gave me" (Walker 316). Dee judges Maggie because of her burned scars: " Sometimes I can still here the flames and feel Maggie's arms sticking to me, her hair smoking and her dress falling off her in little black papery flakes." (Walker 316). Mama is a large big boned woman with rough, man working hands. She wears flannel night gowns to bed and overalls during the day. Mama is like Dee and Maggie, mother, and father. Mama treats Maggie different from Dee. She treats Dee like she is the youngest. They all look at Maggie different because she is a little slow. But, Maggie knows the most. Mama spoils Dee and she also get Dee whatever she wants. Overall the story "Everyday Use" is based off who know the most about their heritage. The quilt is the problem in the story. Both Maggie and Dee wanted the quilt. Maggie is ashamed of herself because of her skin. Dee is the one who think she is on top of the world.
