African Americans have been burdened with the stigmas of racism for quite some time. It is indeed a fact that the media plays an extremely large role in maintaining a racial imbalance. These imbalances are executed through social media pathways, newspaper articles and television networks such as NBC & CBS. Another large tactic used to the detriment of African Americans is the inequality that is the judicial system. News outlets will often depict a false image of a black offender versus his white counterpart.

Even if said actresses get a role, they would be cast for stereotypical scenarios in which black people "belong." Even with their memorable roles and numerous accolades, African Americans' accomplishments usually go unmerited in the media. What does the African American community do to combat these subtle signs of racism? Well for one thing, these use the power of media against itself. They responded by invoking activism of the Martin Luther King kind. An organization named Black Lives Matter was founded in July 2013 with the purpose to protest and actively divert attention the injustices of society. Although this organization is known all over the United States, African Americans are still experiencing push backs and scorn from mass media. There is still room for improvements and support from their own communities. Though racism in society is not a new concept, with the overwhelming effect on the masses, the media continues to rear its ugly head in the direction of civil disobedience.
