The purpose of this paper is to present an analysis of the history and current state of agricultural subsidy programs in the United States. The original intent of these programs are discussed and compared to the current use and distribution of federal resources to identify inefficiencies and potential areas for improvements. In addition to the financial and economic effects of agricultural subsidies, the factors of social welfare and impact on consumers' nutrition and health are discussed along with efficiency improvements that could better allocate taxpayer dollars to farms in need and crops that contribute more to social welfare and the health of society as a whole. Beginning in the 1930s, agricultural subsidy programs were established in the United States to address the issues of inelastic supply and demand of the agriculture market along with the nature of the industry that faces uncertain performance in terms of production and demand, which can vary greatly from year to year (Urry, 2015).
