Reflection on Alternative Assignment When brainstorming advocacy projects I wanted to do something that assisted with the rising number of adolescent drug and alcohol use. I thought that additional education could assist them in understanding the negative consequences that can come from beginning their use early and using the substances in general. Once I decided on my population and purpose of the assignment, I looked at narrowing the population even more and make it more specialized to middle school and high school educators and administrators in rural Iowa. The following will explain in more detail the approach I took to this assignment and why I chose to do it. When I think about adolescents and alcohol/drug use, I think about people that I knew in high school. In many psychology courses we learn that psychoeducation is important and that it can assist in bettering one's understanding of a substance, treatment, or other psychological disorders. Through brainstorming I thought about the education that I received on drugs and alcohol when I was in school, which was next to nothing. In fifth grade we partook in the D.A.R.E. program that was supposed to teach us the harmfulness of drugs and alcohol and to pledge not to use any of the substances. In middle school there was one week that they put up posters and our homeroom teacher read a paper to us about the harmfulness of drugs.
