There is no doubt that life is hard and people can contribute to that, but life truly becomes unbearable when you stop being true to yourself. In the song "Always," RM talks about how he has lost his past true self and has no more hope in life. He says that he has lost his past innocent self because he tried desperately to fit in and be understood by others. When he was younger he got separated from his peers and friends because he was different. He was very smart and at the top of his class– he was on track to go to college and become an engineer, but he dreamt of becoming a singer, a dream that most people found impossible. He dropped out to pursue a music career and everyone he knew disassociated themselves from him, fearing that he would be a failure and an embarrassment. Due to no one believing in him and isolating him he has lost his happy and innocent past self for his new pessimistic and negative self. The line "Why is it that I'm being so earnest yet it's not working out," talks about how he has a void inside him due to losing his past self and he is unable to fill the void with his newfound money and popularity. To him his life is pointless because he is all alone. RM doesn't pursue life because he doesn't feel alive and often has to prove to himself that he is actually living.
