From the beginning humans have identified with each other through the same beliefs, experiences, religion, and location. Through this identification comes a sense of place and community, otherwise known as culture. Most people cherish their culture and pass the traditions down onto their offspring. By passing down one's culture it creates a very unique and diverse world. A unique culture that dates back to sixteenth–century Europe is the Amish (Kraybill 1989). The Amish do not believe in going to the police or suing one another. This belief originated from the Anabaptist concept of "Gelassenheit", meaning to give up or give in to God's will and yielding to the service of the church or community (Kraybill 1989). However, there have been some occasions where the Amish community, as a whole, has decided to make exceptions. The most common litigation issue involved schooling of the Amish children (Hostetler and Huntington 1971). Amish do not educate their children beyond the eighth grade. As the school compulsory attendance laws were being changed to include high school aged children, the Amish found themselves in violation of the law. The State of Ohio prosecuted several Amish families for not sending their children to school or for sending them to an Amish school that was not recognized by the state (Haddix 2005). To avoid being prosecuted families fled the area in fear of being jailed or having their children taking away. During this time of upheaval, a group from Older Order Amish split into a separate group called the Swartzentruber Amish, because, they believed the Older Order Amish was too modern (Louden 1991).
