The book I choose for this marking period was "Angels and Demons" by Dan Brown. Dan Brown's father was a math teacher and his mother was a church organist. This background paved the path where he developed a fascination with science and religion. These are themes seen in all of his books, especially this one, where he uses the idea that science and religion are intertwined. I felt that this story, driven by the theme of science and religion being the same thing, was a refreshing story that stood out from what I have read recently. It gave me the opportunity to think about the question he poses from the beginning, " Is religion, specifically Christianity, the same as science, just from a different perspective?" Being Christian myself, it made me question several of my ideas and opinions and forced me to become opened minded to the ideas that Brown gives. After reading this book, I felt as if I understood why the church has been so against science, and it reinforced my opinion and whether or not that was the right stance to have. This book reminds us to think open mindedly about the connection between the church and science, and to never allow ourselves to be so stubborn in our beliefs to realize the good that can come of either. I also believe that even if a person has no stance on science and religion, or is indifferent to it, it will still teach them new perspectives to think about.
