Analysis Of St. Lucy's Home For Girls Raised By Wolf
In "St. Lucy's Home for Girls Raised by Wolves" by Karen Russell, Mirabella, Claudette, and Jeanette, are forced to convert in to human society, after spending the entirety of their life raised by wolves. Claudette, who is both the middle child and the narator struggles with fully developing through out the story. Once she "graduates" from St. Lucys she visits her parents in the forest one last time. Although Claudette can function as a typical human, she still however, has yet to fully transition from a wolf girl, into the proper girl of society. In stage one (1) when Claudette first arived at St. Lucys, she had yet to figure out how to adapt to human–society. She scrambled throughout the rooms, "over turning dresser drawers, pawning through the neat piles of the stage three (3) girls' starched underwear..." (Russell, 237). Claudette hadn't begun to walk on all fours until the middle of stage two (2). However Claudette began to comprehend the idea of human food, "the deacon handed out stale cupcakes...". In this stage Claudette has improved, in a sense. However, has a lot more developing to go. ... Claudette learns to read far before Jeanette (her older sister). The beginning of stage three (3), Claudette begins to "take dainting bites of peas and borscht" (Russell, 244). Which shows that she is no longer eating like a wild animal, as she had previously. Claudette "stuggles to conjure up a picture of her mother. A black shadow running behind the watery screen of pines" (Russell, 247). This indicates development, and a sense of displacement from her original state of mind. However, Claudette still is "experiencing a strong sense of dislocation." (Russell, 239). Which indicates that she is still not completely willing to adapt to
