Analysis Of Peking Restaurant


For this project, I went to Peking restaurant in Junction City, Kansas, to discover more about the culture of a Chinese restaurant. Whether good or bad, I went in with the expectation of this being just a generally "Chinese" restaurant that most restaurants that reflect some Asian culture and was surprised to find out that this restaurant was intended to be legitimately Chinese in its cultural identity. Through asking some of the staff questions about the restaurant and my own observations, I wrote this paper to share what I learned on my pseudo–fieldwork trip to Peking restaurant. What is represented in the décor and art in the restaurant? The décor of the restaurant is much what is expected of a Chinese Restaurant in America. The wall decorations were mostly art that reflected the Chinese art style that most American people would associate with a sit down Chinese restaurant. Most of the décor had some Chinese characters on them, but I did not inquire on what they said. There was an aquarium in the restaurant, but it was more of a diorama in that there were not actual fish. Overall, save for the distinctly Chinese décor, the restaurant looked and felt like any other restaurant that I could step into in a small town. What music and sounds, such as languages(s), are heard? The music that was playing in the background of the restaurant was all in Chinese, but all of the songs were some kind of music that was relaxing and set a calm environment. While sitting in the
